A trailer park in Azle, Texas
October 25th
Daddy's gonna kill me if I am late to work again Cecil thought, digging through the pile of dirty clothes at the foot of his bed.
He and Bubba needed to get their sorry asses to the Laundromat. Cecil managed to find a grey work shirt that didn't smell foul and he put it on. He slipped on his steel toe work boots and he buckled his jeans up. He checked his pockets for his tin of chew. He opened his closet door and glanced in the cheap mirror bolted to the inside of it.
Cecil raked a hand through his wet hair and then he pulled a McGee's garage cap over his head. He walked out of his bedroom and he spotted Bubba sitting on the lopsided couch in the living room. Bubba focused on the large square television set. He was playing a video game. He jerked a controller in the air with both of his hands.
"Morning," Cecil said, walking into the small kitchen and making a cup of coffee.
"Hey now," Bubba said.
Cecil shook his head at the mess of dirty dishes in the kitchen. "Hey man, can you clean up the kitchen today? These dishes are gross."
"It's your rotation on the dishes Cecil," Bubba said. He paused his game and turned toward his friend. "And don't bitch 'cause you're the one who set up the schedule."
Cecil frowned and opened the refrigerator door. There was very little inside. He opened a carton of eggs and pulled out the last two. "Okay, fair enough. But can you at least grab some groceries?"
"That I can do," Bubba said. "But I have to go get my check at the Busty and Lusty first."
"And don't buy chips and cupcakes," Cecil said. "Get us some actual food. We eat too much garbage."
"So what do you want?" Bubba asked.
"I don't know. Get some stuff that's easy to make," Cecil said, digging a frying pan out of a cupboard. "Like microwavable burritos. And canned chili. Wolf Brand. Don't get nothing that is going to rot after two days."
Cecil noticed a pile of Halloween decorations in a cardboard box next to the couch. "Did you buy some new decorations? I thought we were budgeting ourselves for a flat screen."
"No, my mama gave me these," Bubba explained. "I figured I would put them up today."
"I don't know why you decorate the trailer every year," Cecil said, cracking the eggs into the frying pan. "We're never here on Halloween night."
"I do up the trailer and put out a bowl of candy every year because I grew up in a trailer park," Bubba said. "There ain't nothing worse than a vengeful park kid on Halloween night. I am saving us a mess to clean."
"But you know good and well that the first kid who comes to the step takes every damn piece in the bowl."
"Maybe, but the kids see the note on the door and the empty bowl and they know we made the attempt," Bubba said.
